Abstract
If you are at the receiving end of the high-tech revolution, as a user, then do you feel overwhelmed by some of the current high-tech trends and the debates as well as the acronyms that accompany them? If so, then you are not alone, but what is important in such moments is to not throw out the baby with the bathtub! There is, indeed, a lot of hype about Rich Internet Applications (RIA) among software engineers, some of which has to do with ‘techies getting excited over technological breakthroughs’ but more importantly the real excitement about RIA pertains to what it can do for end users and various lines of business.

RIAs enable developers to leverage the server side applications (e.g., J2E/JEE, .NET) for designing highly responsive User Interfaces (UIs) on the client side, which remains technology‐agnostic. In other words, RIAs allows software engineers to develop web applications that are similar to desktops. RIAs are data‐centric as opposed to content‐centric, which is the case with HTML and HTTP‐based web browsers where each page needs to be refreshed following a user action; by contrast, RIA‐enabled web browsers can fetch only the needed data from the remote data server asynchronously using HTTP service, web service and RTMP or another protocol.
