The Challenge
The customer wanted to expend its product offerings to address all the needs of its customer in the most convenient manner. To achieve this goal the customer identified the need to:
- Assess sourcing options for increasing global product development group flexibility to meet time-to-market requirements from the business units
- Evaluate opportunities for reducing software development and system maintenance costs through operational improvements or alternate outsourcing solutions
HCL’s Solution
HCL conducted a Systems Assessment Exercise for its global product development group, the internal IT and product development division of the customer. The exercise was focused on analyzing the outsourcing potential of over 500 applications in the group.
- Applications were identified and categorized into 3 different buckets:
- Pursue Vigorously (Very easy to Outsource)
- High Potential (Require further subjective analysis)
- Pilot Carefully (highly critical and there is a risk attached to these applications)
- Implementation of application portfolio management tools to bring transparency and application level visibility.
- Managing the resources at program or product level to meet the Time-to-Market requirement and reducing the cost.
- Making the application’s portfolio lean and efficient including a roadmap for the sunset applications
- Practices, standards and controls for keeping track of system level documentation for each application
