Companies can improve significantly by giving up on fixed roles and moving staff between teams to share ideas.

Most companies keep things simple. Each employee has a job title, a line manager and a defined role in a team or department. As structures go, it is a straightforward way of knowing who does what and where responsibilities lie.

However, benefits can be obtained by abandoning these certainties and replacing them with a flexible network model — one in which staff move between teams depending on where their skills are needed, and teams are disbanded and reformed as business needs change.
