In case of automation products, once a new version is announced or is effectively released, the customers and in general any user have great expectations of it.
"Will it be able to address the needs of my company?", "Will it be able to reduce the burden of my daily activities?", "Will it be able to increase the efficiency of my organization?". "Will it be able to work with my existing applications?" They are just a few simple concerns that customers have against new product versions.
Thus, they are not forced to give a credit of trust to new releases. They give the development priorities and have the opportunity to appreciate the firsthand experience of the automation product’s essence.
Indeed, thanks to the transparent development program, customers are the first validators of the feature before and after its development, and therefore they will not receive any surprises once the product is released.
Also in this new release, we have been guided by this philosophy and therefore we've tried to increasingly answer to the efficiency, innovation and simplicity questions that customers have always asked.
For these reasons, Workload Scheduler Version 9.4 has answered these questions with several features, which the most important are described below, for all users: on Premise, on Cloud (SaaS) and on Bluemix (PaaS).
Auditing & Versioning
Maintaining and keeping control of a big scheduling environment can be a challenging task since different actors (e.g. schedulers, operators, developers) have access to the scheduling application flows and can implement a lot of definition and runtime changes. Using instead the new auditing and versioning feature, administrators can now easily understand not only when the change happened, but also who made the change, and why the change was made. After you get this information, you have also the possibility, through Dynamic Workload Scheduler, to open a comparison viewer and quickly identify what was changed and in case revert back it to previous version using the restore feature.
In order to increase the use case scenarios of file dependency and make its usage easier, TWS Version 9.4 has introduced the possibility to define it adopting the dynamic variable substitution method already used for dynamic job definition. The file name hence becomes dynamic and it’s automatically resolved at job execution time. This is very useful when the name of such files is not known until they are created (e.g. a file with a timestamp in the name). Finally, using the dynamic variables, you can extend the size of the file name for a dependency to 1024 characters giving you a greater flexibility in the file dependency definition.
Manage Workload Security from Dynamic Workload Console
The security management of the product has been ridiculously enhanced with the new Role-based security model.
The previous versions of the product security was managed by the Security File configuration: with this enhancement a completely new approach has been introduced, that is mutually exclusive to the security file one, allowing the usage of Access Control Lists, Domains and Roles.
Administrator can now easily define:
- A specific security domain as subset of objects with simple or advanced filtering criteria;
- What kind of actions can be performed on objects with customizable roles, and…
- …a combination of both with Access Control List definition assigned to specific scheduler’s users or groups.

New Graphical View for Workload Designer
A completely brand-new and revamped graphical view is coming to help schedulers with Job Streams definition and design.
This new graphical view is designed to give quick-actions to speed-up the scheduler’s work, improve the performance and scalability of the entire interface and simplify the objects visualization adding two separate views for Job Stream’s external and internal dependencies.
With the new graphical view, you can also customize the objects’ layout and re-organize all the elements according to your needs!
Depending on the specific scenario, obviously the advantages of the above features could be different. For that reason, we strongly suggest you to browse the IBM Marketplace portal to learn about and try all of the new TWS features, and to stay tuned for latest news.
See you next time!
