Client/ Case Background

  • A Life Insurance/Financial company primarily serving personnel associated with US Armed Forces, offering a wide range of products in banking, insurance and investment services to nearly 4.5 million members for the past 77 years
  • By 2001, took a strategic decision to strengthen its IT outsourcing model and to extend it to offshore sourcing. This was driven by a need to reduce costs, to ensure that IT was strongly aligned to its business and to improve service delivery. The company chose HCL as its offshore partner


Challenges/ Objectives

  • Reverse engineering of Financials Processes to replace existing mainframe processes - The old mainframe system with extensive hard coded logic was used to push data in
    PeopleSoft Financials, so users were unable to configure it according to day to day business needs
  • Error reporting was not present, so inadequate exception reporting often took valuable time in troubleshooting and timely execution of processes
  • Provide a new end user maintenance facility which would allow maintenance of supporting tables and the System should be able to merge with the environment post upgrade with no extra effort. Provide technical support during the porting and implementation of the new proposed PeopleSoft system.


HCL‘s Solution / Role

Based on our understanding we presented three alternative feasible solutions:

  • The PeopleSoft Integrated Solution: This solution replaces the PL/1 logic with a PeopleSoft GL front End, where PeopleSoft will also handle the UI for the Business Rule tables and report generation. The client chose this model after discussions and analysis with HCL
  • The Informatica Integrated Solution: In this proposal the Informatica ETL repository manages the data fed into the GL while the Business Rule tables’ maintenance as well as report generation is managed via Java
  • The Informatica/PeopleSoft Integrated Solution: This solution replaces the PL/1 logic with an Informatica ETL repository. However, the UI for the Business Rule tables and report generation will be handled within PeopleSoft.


We used PeopleSoft technology (PS Financials 8.0 SP2, People Tools 8.17) to implement the solution; The Application Engine was used as the integration tool; Crystal for reporting; VSS for version control; In-house quality tools to capture quality matrices; and FTP server to transfer the data.

Results/ Benefits

  • Cost reductions have been achieved
  • PeopleSoft Technologies have replaced hard code programs
  • Provided externalized Business Rules using PeopleSoft Control Tables
  • Better Error Capture, Data Validation and Exception Reporting
  • Customer satisfaction has dramatically improved
  • Future complex projects are now jointly planned, managed and implemented by the client and HCL
