Situation
  • The client is a leading global provider of best-in-class clinical, commercial and consulting services for companies to accelerate performance.
  • Raja from HCL was helping the client in handling the tickets from monitoring tools
Problem
  • There were about 10,000 tickets from monitoring tools in a month because of which it became very difficult to focus on user tickets.
Solution
  • To ensure adequatememory resource, disk and CPU allocation, Raja gave asimple idea of increasing the resources on individual servers
Impact
  • The idea generated a huge value for the client.

Situation
  • The client is Asia's prominent international stock exchange, a company that provides services related to securities, derivatives trading and others.
  • Padmanaban from HCL was handling client's storage backup, database and middleware tracks.
Problem
  • There were no monitoring tools available for the Middleware, a software that functioned as a very critical layer between the application and the operating system.
  • There was also a dependency on human hands for manually monitoring the application and therefore being prone to human error.
Solution
  • Padmanaban and his team implemented a few off-the- shelf tools which helped track Middleware's health, monitored it closely and further automated the monitoring exercise.
Impact
  • Effective monitoring made the team proactive, which helped in predicting Middleware behavior before being alerted by the user. The idea also helped in optimizing and improving operational efficiency.

  • The client is a mass media giant with operations across diverse businesses.
  • Sarath from HCL was working as apart of the Data Center Management function in the client's environment
Problem
  • One of the servers in the environment had developed a snag due to which no tickets were being generated
Solution
  • Sarath suggested to the team to reinstall the application using the backup
Impact
  • The idea saved the client from facing huge losses.

  • The client is a Massachusetts based developer and supplier of automated testing equipment. Praveen from HCL was working with the client as a Service Delivery Manager

Problem
  • The hardware at the client's data center was on the verge of becoming obsolete, which resulted in slowing down the services of the data center
Solution
  • Praveen's ideas was to use more powerful servers in a manner that each physical server could host 25-30 virtual servers on them, additionally one could use the same number of licenses for the virtual servers
Impact
  • The idea saved the cost of buying physical servers, which saved great value for the client

Situation
  • The client is a mass media giant with operations across diverse businesses 
  • Kiran from HCL, with mastery in Windows technology, is part of the infrastructure support of the Wintel servers
Problem
  • There were close to 100 incidents being generated per day with every incident taking 30-40 minutes to get resolved
  • The storage box was low on disk space and was not clearing its logs
Solution
  • Kiran gave a simple idea of setting a reminder for removing logs from the flash drives
Impact
  • The idea helped in reducing the number of incidents from 100 to just 5
  • With reduced incidents to manage, Kiran and the team generated huge value for the client

Situation
  • The client is a mass media giant with operations across diverse businesses
  • Gaurav from HCL, was managing client’s physical and virtual servers
Problem
  • Gaurav noticed that there was a sudden spike in the number of incidents, i.e. from typical 4000 incidents to over 8000 incidents in a month
  • Apart from that, certain thresholds had to be modified, because of which a lot of false, duplicate incidents were being generated
Solution
  • Gaurav went on to analyze the event IDs that were being monitored and got a few of the irrelevant ones disabled
  • Gaurav reassessed the threshold level of the alerts and got them changed and corrected accordingly
  • Gaurav also selected the event IDs that needed to be redirected to other teams
Impact
  • By clipping the IDs, channeling them to the correct teams, Gaurav in an essence saved a lot of time that can be spent in addressing more critical matters

Situation
  • The client is one of the world’s prominent wine manufacturers, distributers and brewery firms
  • Vasanth from HCL was helping the client in hosting servers
Problem
  • The client had no subject matter expert to assess the technical needs and budget savings
  • Client’s servers were about 10-15 years old and when the large servers were introduced, it escalated their hosting charges
Solution
  • Vasanth’s idea was a smarter deployment of technology, aimed to reduce customer’s cost.
  • Vasanth suggested to use hi-end boxes with multiple partitions, where each partition functioned like an independent server
Impact
  • The idea reduced the number of people required to maintain the servers
  • This idea, from Vasanth’s team, also resulted in huge savings for the client

Situation
  • The client is a UK based company, dealing in long-term savings solutions
  • Deepak from HCL was helping the client in the JDE migration project
Problem
  • As a part of the project, there was a need to relocate JDE infrastructure to a like-to-like setup
Solution
  • HCL infra team suggested virtualization, which is a cheaper technology as compared to the cost of maintaining physical servers
  • Deepak and his team devised a solution to accommodate the Biz Talk data-base by reducing the usage of 6 physical servers
Impact
  • The client saved huge cost by implementing the idea

Situation
  • The client is the world’s largest manufacturer of rolled aluminum
  • Amanullah from HCL was providing infrastructure support to the client
Problem
  • The client being an old company was using outdated Windows NT and 2K OS
  • The monitoring tool was unable to connect to the Windows NT or 2K OS
  • The client was unwilling to implement new monitoring tools and incur costs of new licenses for outdated servers due to compatibility issues
Solution
  • The Idea allowed to utilize the disk over 80% and the script to automatically generate an alert and send it to the command center
  • The alert was then converted into an incident ticket to be filed under incident management
Impact
  • The customer verified and approved the idea and also gave it an excellent rating

Situation
  • The client is a major energy company in oil and gas production
  • Nikhil Verma from HCL was at the Norwegian site to help solve theclient’s problem
Problem
  • 60% of the client’s SQL server database configured with SharePoint Application
  • Single restoration request took 5-10 hours or days to complete   
  • Also there were high instances of data unavailability for disk space and healthmonitoring for SQL instances
Solution
  •  Nikhil designed a tool that captured live configuration
  • The design kept pace with the environment and its requirements
  • The design gave the team a heads up before the disk space ran out
  • It also reduced the downtime for database and other critical applications
Impact
  • With a team of 7 engineers handling the database, Nikhil’s team helpedreduce the customer dependency to hire any resources
  • As a result of the design, there were close to 8-10 restoration requestsin a day

Situation
  • The client is an American software company that deals in cloud andvirtualization software and services 
  • Sai and his team were handling client’s database servers
Problem
  •  Frequent email generation in client’s company was taking up too much inbox spaceof employees’ mailboxes.
Solution
  • Sai came up with a solution that made it possible to condense the informationof 20 emails, containing 20 databases, into 1 email containing details of 20 servers
Impact
  • The client was delighted by Sai’s idea and gave it immediate thumbs up  
  • This idea saved client’s time and effort, which allowed them to work onmore critical tasks. 
AJAY RAM KUMAR GURUSAMY
AJAY RAM KUMAR GURUSAMY Working as a Technical Specialist with HCL Technologies
Situation
  • The client is a market leader in the banking business
  • Ajay from HCL was working on an idea to help solve the server-backups related issues the client was struggling with
Problem
  • Ajay’s client used IBM AIX servers which have operating systems running on Unix.
  • The systems were running with ineffective backup exercise, i.e. if the whole system crashed the backups were unable to restore the whole system.
  • The systems were also unable to generate any reports for the backup
Solution
  • Ajay designed a server that was able to take backups, capable of generating reports, with one single command called “Make System Backup” or ‘mksysb’.
  • Ajay took the idea ahead and generated multiple scripts to pull up different sort of data
Impact
  • The idea gave the systems more speed and added efficiency. 
  • In the event of the system crash, the backup was now able to restore the entire server
