The Challenge

  • The Customer provides its Instrument Management System (IMS) application called Impress Scan 2.1, to its Customers who enter into long-term contract for supplies. Impress Scan 2.1's current version was developed in the early 1990s and is a customer-server application developed in VB / SQL Server. This version of the IMS is riddled with bugs and maintenance issues. The application can also not be scaled up to meet growing business needs. Since it is a customer-server application, there are significant effor ts involved in releasing new versions manually to each Customer via CDs.

HCL’s Solution

  • HCL offered its .NET expertise to build a new cost effective Instrument Management System to replace legacy application.
  • After evaluating various architectures the multi-layer pattern architecture was used with COM+ and Web Services.
  • As this was the first offshore project for the customer, the HCL team had to work closely to help them understand the offshore processes and methodologies.
  • To speed up the development, the entire project was split into 3 releases, with the most complex modules being part of the first release. This approach ensured that the most complex parts of the application were tackled early on and any delays were absorbed without impacting the overall schedule.
