HCL was engaged by a top 10 global pharmaceutical to do a business analysis of the applications in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) marketspace and provide recommendations on building a 5 year strategic plan. Additionally, HCL provided analysis on the End of Life for the CRU applications and provided recommendations to support the client's Disaster Recovery planning CRUs.

Business Objective:

  1. The client operates Clinical Research Units spread around the globe and is looking to harmonize application platforms
  2. The client has multiple application platforms deployed to address the various unique business requirement for running Phase 1 trials. They were looking for an analysis of the currently available COTS solutions with market trends to compare against their current deployment to assist with the buy/build/replace analysis
  3. Provide End of Life analysis for the major CRU applications and make recommendations regarding the Disaster Recovery options

  1. HCL surveyed approximately 400 vendors across the following disciplines: Hospital Information Systems, Practice Management Systems, Clinical Trial Management Systems, Electronic Data Capture, EKG Management Systems, EKG devices, Lab Information management Systems, Online Health Records, e-Prescribing Systems and Phase 1 Trials Management Systems
  2. HCL also interviewed IT staff from Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) and Clinical Research Units (CRUs) to gather more detail on the deployed state of applications in this marketspace
  3. HCL prepared a market analysis grouping technology providers by category against an Innovation vs. Functionality chart to showcase the state of the COTS market supporting the business needs of the client's CRUs
  4. HCL provided a detailed End of Life Analysis for each of the major CRU applications. This analysis covered the major risk areas of (Regulatory) Compliance, Business Gaps, (Underlying) Technology Stack and Application Support Health
  5. HCL provided analysis documentation to support the Disaster Recovery planning initiative for the CRU applications set. Included were consolidated documentation to supplement architecture diagrams, detailed application components mapping with impact analysis for downtime and documentation covering application Interfaces
