Patient Monitoring System Using Open-source Edge Frameworks

Remote patient monitoring system’s usage is increasing rapidly in the healthcare sector. Nowadays, healthcare professionals prefer remote patient monitoring over manual checking to analyze vital health signs. This prevents burnout to healthcare workers and facilitates healthcare services provided in hospitals. But there is a major concern for processing large amounts of data in remote servers or cloud that causes latency issues and requires more bandwidth. That's where edge computing comes into play. It processes data near its source, hence preventing high latency and bandwidth issues.

Thus, for remote patient monitoring, an edge gateway is needed to collect data, analyze it and send out the data to cloud for monitoring remotely. On the other hand, the design and development of an edge gateway during the software development phase is challenging. Software developers and solution architects need to work on the software design, development and testing, which consumes significant time and effort. These problems can be mitigated by using open-source edge computing frameworks to develop edge gateway. It will prevent software development from scratch which in-turn improves faster time to market.

This paper proposes the open-source EdgeX framework to design an edge gateway for a remote patient monitoring system since, it satisfies all the requirements of an edge gateway. The paper is divided into three sections. The first part of the paper provides an overview of the remote patient monitoring system and its types. It also explains the requirements of an edge gateway. The second part focuses on the proposed framework and how it satisfies the edge gateway requirements. Lastly, the third part presents a case study to demonstrate a working model of a patient monitoring system using the proposed solution. Download whitepaper to continue reading.
