Energy Saving Self-Priming Pump

In many pumping applications, the pumps work for 30% of the discharge to 120% of the discharge, depending on the demand at the site or plant (Fig.1). The lower discharge for most of the pumps is achieved by throttling of the valve which causes enormous amount of pressure loss across the valve, and thus energy loss.

In some applications, variable drives are used so impeller speed is reduced instead of throttling the valve which saves energy. The speed can be reduced by using VFD with a motor or using pulleys, or gearbox or engine drive. However, these solutions are either costly or not user- or eco-friendly.

HCL’s patented solution, presented here, has multiple impellers housed in the same casing where selectively, some impellers can be set to rotation or stopped, depending on high or low discharge requirement, thus saving energy (Fig. 2).

In this new energy saving pump, designed and patented by HCL (Fig.3), the casing has chambers to accommodate at least one non-disengageable impeller and at least one engageable impeller, each respectively. When lower head is required, only a single impeller operates, and the other impeller is kept disengaged (Figs.4 and 5). The compartments can be connected in series to generate higher head (Figs. 6 and 7) or in parallel to generate higher flow (Figs. 8 and 9) by selectively opening or closing the flow control valves. This disengageable impeller is engaged by operating the lever mechanism, which engages the impeller through a gear.

Self-priming is also incorporated in this energy saving pump with the aid of suction positioned at a certain level from the casing.
