Beyond Survival: Pointers for Recession-hit Banks

This Chinese Benediction (or is it a curse?) seems to have come good, and the banking world indeed faces “interesting times” ahead. For starters, the list of commercial banks is itself in flux, getting shorter with bank casualties and longer when an investment bank like Goldman Sachs agrees to become a commercial bank. 
 
Fee-based businesses are surely declining in tandem with the recession in the general economy, while banks are either chary about, or capital strapped from growing their fund-based businesses. And where banks do wish to lend (as in the case of a prime housing loan), the number of customers have dwindled worldwide; spooked either by high interest rates (in countries such as India) or the prospect of potential job losses and other factors (in the West).
