Driving operational efficiency and VOD growth
A leading tier-1 media company in the MENA region requested to expand its digital entertainment offerings and improve operational efficiency. The company provides IP video products and billing services, delivering customizable entertainment and sports solutions to drive broadband adoption, create new revenue streams and enhance consumer engagement.
The Challenge
To meet growing market demands, the company launched a new division focused on Video-on-Demand (VOD) services. This was done to aggregate an ever-growing amount of content, enrich metadata, transcode and manage the lifecycle of each asset — all while adding minimal impact on the current business, financially and operationally. They were not only trying to keep their current business model but also to improve efficiency and minimize human errors. In a siloed, manual (or semi-scripted) environment, it is easy to lose a massive amount of metadata that needs to be input, managed and output in different formats to different types of distribution platforms. However, this is crucial for operators, as mis-tagged content can quickly become a major reason for missed revenue. One last major challenge was to unify their content metadata, between their VOD library and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), to reduce the time-to-market by eliminating the need to create Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) data from scratch when most information is already available in the VOD database.

The Objective
Implement a solution that automates workflows, enriches metadata and integrates VOD and IPTV operations, enabling faster time-to-market, improved efficiency and scalability without disrupting existing business processes.
The Solution
HCLTech Media Workflow Manager was introduced as an integrated digital asset management platform with open architecture. Key features included:
- Workflow automation for resource control, metadata enrichment, asset management. Integration with media functions to process content from ingestion and transcoding through editing and publishing.
- Metadata enrichment through auto-extraction and integration with internal and external databases.
- EPG sync and management, to streamline operations and repurpose enriched metadata for VOD or EPG. The involved workflows for EPG are compliant with the workflows applied for the VOD services. This provides efficient and quality EPG information, as well as augmented metadata that is reusable for both IPTV and VOD services — all contributing to enhanced experience for IPTV and OTT services.
- Flexible customization and integration, reducing tools and manual processes while eliminating errors.

The Impact
- 27,000+ workflows per month automated.
- 4,000+ files ingested monthly, supporting growing content demands.
- 10,000 publish workflows per month, enabling fast transcoding and distribution with just a single click — or even automatically depending on the publishing platform.
- Seamless transition, introducing a new format on OTT, serving new types of devices, without disturbing the existing workflow or adding extra operators.

Looking Ahead
The company is looking at AI to enhance the quality of the service offered, starting from the Electronic Program Guide (EPG). AI can revolutionize EPG management by not only automatically checking and correcting inconsistencies in program data, ensuring a consistent format and style and intelligently filling in missing metadata through content analysis and inference, but also by enabling the automatic creation of EPGs. The result is a cleaner, more accurate guide that enhances operational efficiency and delivers a superior user experience.
