In the first episode of our Decoding the Ws podcast series, Kapil Tiwari, Associate Director, Product Management Group Lead, Hybrid Cloud Services, HCLTech, explores what it takes to scale intelligent edge operations while building resilience into the enterprise. The discussion is moderated by Chirag Mehra, Associate Manager, Hybrid Cloud, DFS Marketing, HCLTech.

Hybrid cloud is becoming an operating model

For many enterprises, hybrid cloud is no longer a future-state architecture. Operations already span data centers, public cloud, software-as-a-service platforms and a growing range of edge environments.

That changes the fundamental question around hybrid cloud. Rather than focusing primarily on where workloads should run, organizations increasingly need to consider how they can operate consistently across a distributed technology landscape.

“Hybrid cloud today is less about where things run and more about how enterprises operate across environments,” says Tiwari. “Hybrid cloud becomes the model that connects all of that in a way that's manageable, secure and aligned to business needs.”

This perspective moves the conversation beyond migration. The priority becomes what the hybrid environment enables: more effective distributed operations, intelligence closer to where data is created and greater preparedness for disruption.

As Tiwari puts it, “Once you see it that way, the focus shifts from migration to outcomes.”

Turning fragmented edge environments into coordinated operations

The edge brings the distributed nature of modern enterprises into sharp focus. Branch offices, manufacturing plants, retail stores and warehouses can all generate significant amounts of data, requiring teams to make decisions quickly, sometimes without dependable connectivity to centralized environments.

But scaling these locations can create complexity.

“The biggest issue is fragmentation,” says Tiwari. “As companies scale edge environments, they often end up with different setups at every location, inconsistent security, limited visibility and manual operations.”

addresses this challenge by standardizing how edge environments are deployed, managed and monitored. Rather than treating each location as an isolated technology environment, the objective is to create a coordinated operating model across distributed sites.

The implications extend beyond infrastructure management. Greater consistency can improve visibility and governance while creating a foundation on which organizations can scale operations more effectively.

As Mehra summarizes during the discussion, the goal is to move from “100 locations behaving like 100 different systems” to one coordinated environment.

Tiwari agrees: “That's where scalability becomes possible.”

From data collection to decisions at the edge

AI adds another dimension to the edge opportunity.

Traditionally, edge environments were often designed to collect information and send it back to a central platform for processing. Increasingly, enterprises want to analyze and act on that information where it originates.

“Now, organizations want to act on that data locally,” says Tiwari.

That could support use cases such as real-time monitoring, safety alerts, computer vision and immediate operational decisions. The shift is significant because it changes the role of edge infrastructure itself.

“The edge becomes not just a data point—but a decision point,” explains Tiwari.

For business leaders, this means the edge is not simply another layer of IT architecture. Done effectively, distributed intelligence can help organizations improve visibility across locations, make faster decisions, strengthen governance and unlock AI-driven insights closer to operations.

“It's not just about technology—it's about running a distributed business better,” says Tiwari.

Resilience means preparing for disruption, not just preventing it

The same distributed environments that create new opportunities can also increase the complexity of protecting operations and recovering from disruption.

That is why Tiwari frames cyber resilience around continuity rather than prevention alone.

“Cyber resilience is about continuity,” he says. “Not just preventing attacks—but ensuring that when something does happen, the business keeps running, critical services are restored quickly and impact is minimized.”

This distinction is increasingly relevant at the leadership level. When critical systems become unavailable, the consequences can extend rapidly to operations, revenue and customer trust.

Leadership teams need to ask different questions: How quickly can critical services recover? What would the business impact of disruption be? And is the organization genuinely prepared to respond?

“That's why resilience is no longer just an IT topic—it's a business priority,” says Tiwari.

Designing recovery for a hybrid reality

Building resilience across a hybrid enterprise requires more than a single recovery tool.

Tiwari describes an integrated approach that starts by understanding business priorities and mapping dependencies across applications and data. Strong backup and recovery strategies, secure recovery environments, testing and readiness planning are also essential components.

Crucially, these capabilities need to work across on-premises infrastructure, cloud and edge environments.

The distributed nature of hybrid cloud makes this particularly important. Applications, systems and data can be interconnected across multiple locations and environments, making recovery a question not only of whether something can be restored but also what should be restored first, in what sequence and under what security controls.

“That's why resilience has to be designed into the architecture—not added later,” says Tiwari.

This moves resilience upstream. Instead of being treated primarily as a response mechanism, it becomes an architectural and operational consideration from the outset.

Bringing distributed intelligence and resilience together

Edge intelligence and cyber resilience can appear to address different enterprise priorities, but the discussion highlights how closely connected they are.

“They represent two sides of the same reality,” says Tiwari. Intelligent Edge enables distributed intelligence and operations. Cyber resilience ensures those operations are protected and recoverable.

The relationship is important. As enterprises distribute more technology, data and intelligence across their operations, their ability to innovate increasingly depends on managing that complexity consistently and recovering when disruption occurs.

“One helps you scale and innovate. The other ensures you can sustain and recover,” says Tiwari. “Together, they define what hybrid cloud actually needs to deliver today.”

For organizations reassessing their hybrid cloud strategies, this provides a useful shift in perspective. The goal is not simply to assemble infrastructure across different environments. It is to create an operating model capable of supporting distributed operations, enabling AI and sustaining the business through disruption.

Tiwari closes with three questions for leaders: “Are we scaling in a structured way? Are we ready for disruption? Are we aligning technology with business outcomes?”

Those questions point to where the value of hybrid cloud increasingly lies, not in the infrastructure itself, but in what the enterprise can confidently do with it.
