Overview

A global leader in infrastructure and equipment wanted to transform its backup environment that supports workloads across on-prem and . The organization managed a 3.5 PB backup environment using a legacy backup solution that presented security, scalability and operational challenges.

HCLTech helped modernize the client's backup environment by implementing a structured backup architecture for critical and non-critical applications. The engagement improved protection and recovery capabilities, simplified backup management and reduced the total cost of ownership (TCO) by 25%–30%.

The Challenge

Addressing security, scalability and backup management challenges

The client's existing backup environment lacked ransomware protection and recovery capabilities, while critical applications and workloads were not adequately protected.

At the same time, the legacy backup solution presented scalability limitations and had become increasingly difficult to manage. Multiple vendors supporting different application configurations added further complexity, resulting in operational delays and making backup management more challenging.

The Challenge

The Objective

Creating a more efficient backup environment

The client wanted to transform its backup environment by improving protection for critical applications, simplifying backup management and addressing the limitations of its existing backup solution. The objective was to establish a more efficient backup architecture across on-prem and cloud environments while improving protection and recovery capabilities.

The Solution

The Solution

Implementing a structured backup architecture

HCLTech modernized the client's backup environment by categorizing applications based on their business criticality, ensuring that critical and non-critical workloads received the appropriate level of protection.

To support the new architecture, HCLTech established a modern backup environment across on-prem and cloud infrastructure. Existing environments were reconfigured and new cloud backup clusters were deployed to support growing workloads.

Backup replication was configured across cloud and on-prem environments to improve backup availability and recovery readiness. The solution also enabled consistent backup protection for cloud workloads, creating a more streamlined, scalable and easier-to-manage backup environment.

The Solution

The Impact

Improving protection while reducing operational effort

The transformed backup environment strengthened protection for critical applications, simplified backup operations across and reduced the effort required to workloads.

The Impact

Key outcomes included:

  • Improved protection for critical applications and workloads
  • Enhanced backup efficiency through better deduplication and compression
  • Faster incremental backups, significantly reducing the time required for full periodic backups
  • 25%–30% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • Improved protection and recovery service levels
  • 20%–25% reduction in operational effort through a streamlined data archival process
  • Simplified cloud workload protection with reduced resource requirements
