GH Rao heads the Engineering and R&D Services (ERS) business across sales and delivery functions. With the help of a large and diverse team, ERS provides services to leading product engineering companies globally across multiple industries such as Aerospace, Automotive, Medical devices, Consumer Hi-tech and Telecom.
He joined HCL as a R&D engineer in 1980. During this time, he was part of the R&D team that developed hardware subsystems for a range of micro/mini computers. He was also the chief architect of multi-processor systems that employed contemporary architectures for a range of high-end minicomputers launched by HCL during the late 1980s. In the early 90’s, when HCL and Hewlett Packard formed a joint venture (HCL-HP), GH Rao was responsible for leading the technology adaptation programs, and the engineering teams. With decades of R&D experience, he has held several senior management positions in R&D, at HCL.
During the formation of HCL Technologies in 1996, GH Rao took over the responsibility of building business lines around core engineering services like system and VLSI design services. Since then, he has added several services -including embedded systems - and also repositioned the ERS group to align with industry verticals. Over the years, GH Rao has been responsible for transforming the ERS business to its current scale and expanding the size of its offerings through comprehensive engineering services that span several industry verticals. GH Rao has a strong focus on infrastructure and has been instrumental in building test/compliance labs at HCL - a unique accomplishment in the Indian private industry. He also advocates institutionalizing engineering processes, and has spearheaded several domain specific process certifications in ERS.
GH Rao holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
