Evolution of browsers
The evolution of browsers—from early dial-up days of Netscape and Internet Explorer, to rise of powerful devices like Chromebooks, and now to the GenAI era where browsers are central—demonstrates just how far browsers have advanced alongside the world wide web. Today, in the age of generative AI, browsers do more than just display web pages—they serve as hubs for creativity, enterprise productivity, and connection across the globe. This brings browsers to the center in the enterprise with the advent of GenAI. The enterprise browser is not just being used to read content anymore but a tool to generate content using GenAI tools and becomes a security risk where users can input enterprise data knowingly or unknowingly.
We at HCLTech have been securing enterprise assets since the beginning and recently browsers have become a key concern from our customers. We have seen cases where users use random GenAI tools to do their tasks, install extensions which look useful but are risky, and the security has no visibility on what is happening inside the browser. This leads to loss of company data and bigger headaches down the line. The introduction of AI copilots integrated directly into browsers—such as Microsoft Copilot in Edge, Google’s Gemini in Chrome, and numerous third-party add-ons—has significantly altered the way security is considered.
Enterprise browser - A governance boundary
A browser is not just an enterprise application but should be treated as a governance boundary. Enterprises need to move forward from the Zero trust approach of verifying each user and each device to verify each browser in the perimeter less AI world. Technically, this means instrumenting the browser layer to enforce enterprise AI security policy, inspect contextual data flows, and log actions in real time. Solutions like Island Enterprise Browser, Talon (acquired by Palo Alto Networks), and Microsoft Edge for Business are early proofs of this architectural shift. They allow enterprises to define what a user can do inside a browser session — not just which URLs they can visit.
Browser-native capabilities now include: copy-paste restrictions, screenshot prevention, upload blocking to non-sanctioned AI destinations, and session watermarking which can be enforced regardless of device posture.
This is zero trust browser security in practice: verify context, enforce policy, log everything.
Effective enterprise AI browsing governance requires a structured policy architecture. Organizations must define three tiers of AI interaction:
- Permitted: Sanctioned AI tools with enterprise data handling agreements and contractual DLP guarantees
- Conditional: Tools allowed under content restriction rules — no upload of PII, IP, or regulated data
- Prohibited: Consumer-grade AI platforms with no enterprise data controls or audit capabilities
These tiers must integrate directly with existing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) frameworks — and this is where most enterprises currently fail. Traditional DLP was architected around structured data flows: email attachments, file uploads, database queries. An employee typing a customer contract clause into an AI chat prompt triggers no conventional DLP rule. There is no file, no attachment, no detectable exfiltration signature.
Only a browser-aware DLP engine capable of inspecting AI prompt input fields in real time can close this gap. This is the core technical requirement for any enterprise serious about AI data loss prevention in the coming years.
Control Agent Execution Models
For enterprises adopting agentic AI workflows, governance must extend beyond content inspection to execution control. An allow-listed agent execution model defines which AI agents are permitted to act autonomously, on which systems, under what data conditions.
This is, in effect, a privilege access model for non-human actors — the natural extension of zero trust principles into the AI layer. Just as zero trust demands that human users prove identity and context before resource access, AI agents must operate within declared, auditable, and revocable scopes.
For example, in a real-world scenario - a finance agent may be permitted to read accounts payable dashboards but must require human-in-the-loop (HITL) approval before initiating any payment action. This is not a constraint on AI capability — it is the governance condition under which enterprises can responsibly and sustainably scale that capability.
Having said that securing the enterprise browser in the GenAI world doesn't absolve us from the responsibility of moving away from the foundational element of security such as DLP, lockdown of enterprise browsers such as chrome and edge using traditional endpoint management tools and lockdown of user accesses to data. The strategy should also consider how much efforts will be needed to move to the new ways of working where it could be deploying a new enterprise browser which will involve a longer learning curve vs utilizing browsers and locking them down and pushing extensions which can see what is happening inside the browser.
The enterprise browser strategy should consider these broad factors while securing their enterprise browsers:
- Flexibility – Does the solution allow you to control only a specific browser or only an extension?
- Device posturing – Does it only support existing managed corporate devices or non-managed BYOD devices – Think of contractors, remote workers?
- Privileged Access/Password management - Session injection and secure credential sharing features
- Auditing and logging - Regulatory defensibility and behavioral baseline creation for anomaly detection.
Auditability, Logging, and the Productivity Equation
Enterprises should also know that these new solutions should not create friction or reduce actual employee productivity. The most reasonable inference from the current threat landscape is not that employees are reckless, or that AI is inherently dangerous. It is that enterprises have not yet built the governance infrastructure to commensurate with the power they have handed their workforce through the browser.
HCLTech's conviction is that the window of responsible adoption is now. As agentic AI capabilities mature from convenience features to core business processes, the cost of retrofitting governance will grow exponentially. Organizations that treat the browser as their control plane today — defining policy, enforcing DLP, allow-listing agents, and building audit trails — will not only reduce risk. They will be the ones who can scale AI adoption with confidence, speed, and board-level trust.
The browser is no longer just where work happens. It is where AI governs work. Enterprises that recognize this first will define the standard for everyone else.
