Globally, cities must keep pace with rapid urbanization
Nearly 80% of the world’s GDP is generated in cities. Naturally, rapid urbanization and continuous investments by businesses and governments have been driving a massive population influx. Today, the cities are home to nearly 57% of the world’s population- and projected to go up to nearly 70% by 2050.
The speed and the scale of urbanization, however, must be met by governments and authorities. Denizens are increasingly expecting their cities to be safe, habitable, sustainable and convenient. As of 2021, nearly one billion urban poor live in informal settlements, to be closer to opportunities. The cities account for nearly 70% of the world’s energy consumption as well greenhouse gas emissions. Challenges such as overburdened public infrastructure, increasing pollution, traffic congestions, and rising crime can dent a city’s plans to continue to attract investment by businesses and retention of talent.

Smart cities hold the answer
Emerging technologies such as 5G, AI, cybersecurity and Edge can help in building smart cities of the future to enable improved quality of life, better connectivity, and reduced crime – attracting businesses and nurturing talent. For example, the technology companies in London raised more than $10.5 Bn. in 2020, higher than any other European city.
Some of the technologies being implemented by smart cities worldwide can result in:

Reducing fatalities
by up to 10%

Accelerating emergency
responses by 35%

Removing greenhouse
gas emission by
nearly 15%

Lowering commute
times by 20%

Lowering disease burden
by up to 15%
Intelligent Secure Edge for Smart Cities
The Intelligent Secure Edge (ISE) for Smart Cities, built by HCLTech IoT WoRKSTM using Intel technologies, is a collaborative platform that brings together citizens, communities and authorities as a virtual network, powered by Artificial Intelligence, Edge, Wi-Fi 6, 5G and other next-gen technologies – to drive proactive responses powered by real-time insights.
