Testimonials
I like to reflect on personal heroes like Edward Lewis, Jr. A retired Army Master Sargent who opened three delicatessens in the Detroit area after serving in Germany. I worked in those delis from the age of 9 until college. I learned the value of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and customer service. He provided opportunities to many in our community. Mr. Lewis represented the best of us, and I think of people like him during this celebrated month.”

Whenever I speak to someone who doesn’t look like me, the first thing they’ll say is, ‘oh racism doesn’t exist.’ No, it doesn’t exist for you and that’s great for you. But, I can’t walk into an elevator without someone clutching their purse, or feeling as if someone is watching me as I’m walking through a store. These kinds of experiences you won’t know because you don’t live them, and that’s okay, but at least be open minded enough to understand that my experience is different.”

This is an opportunity for us to teach and to learn about the significant contributions Black people have made, not just to the United States but the world at large. For me, I will confess that I don’t really celebrate Black History Month in February because I celebrate Black history every month of the year.”
