AI is no longer an experimental capability or a simple chatbot that answers questions on demand. Across enterprises, AI is evolving into autonomous digital agents that can read emails, access files, connect to collaboration platforms, trigger workflows and take real actions on behalf of users. Some platforms are even built to run quietly in the background. They don’t just recommend what to do next. They do it. This transition from AI that assists to AI that operates is a fundamental change. It affects how AI must be designed, deployed and governed.

The value AI can deliver when it’s controlled

When deployed responsibly, AI agents can reduce manual effort, improve response times and bring consistency to processes that were previously fragmented or dependent on human availability. They help teams analyze large volumes of information more effectively and scale automation across delivery and operations. If an AI agent is misconfigured, manipulated, or compromised, the blast radius can spread across systems, far beyond a single endpoint. Automation increases that risk by removing the human loop. Humans pause, they question intent, they verify context, whereas an automated systems act immediately. If an AI agent processes a crafted email, a malicious prompt, or a poorly configured workflow, it may share information or trigger unintended actions at speed and at scale before anyone notices. The exact speed that makes AI powerful can also make incidents propagate faster.

A newer risk is also becoming more common: the AI supply chain. As AI tools become popular, attackers imitate them. Security teams are seeing fake extensions, impersonation sites, cloned repositories and malicious “look-alike” automation tools designed to capture credentials or gain access through integrations. Curiosity about new AI tools is natural and attackers exploit it. Even free or open-source AI tools require scrutiny. Openness isn’t the issue; accountability is. Enterprises must know who maintains the tool, how code is reviewed, how vulnerabilities are handled and where data flows. When AI processes internal documents or client information, governance cannot be optional, especially in regulated industries.

Why is leadership accountable for governance?

AI risk isn’t merely “an IT problem.” It directly impacts client trust, compliance obligations, data protection, intellectual property and brand reputation. At enterprise scale, an AI agent with broad permission effectively functions like a privileged account. And privileged access requires deliberate oversight. That’s why AI must be treated as part of the enterprise operating model, not as an informal productivity add-on adopted tool by tool.
