Dr Angeline Achariya Executive Director, Innovation & Growth, Simplot Australia

Joining the first edition of the Women Lead Australia program in 2015 changed that dynamic for me, by making my learning curve just a little less steep.  My mentor Guido, a CFO based in Sydney, gave me a lot of advice that helped me reach the...

Joining the first edition of the Women Lead Australia program in 2015 changed that dynamic for me, by making my learning curve just a little less steep.  My mentor Guido, a CFO based in Sydney, gave me a lot of advice that helped me reach the two most pressing career goals I faced at that time: to build the world’s first sector-wide, collaborative food innovation hub for the global company at which I was then working (this has now evolved into the Monash Food Innovation Centre -- an independent innovation platform hosted by Monash University), and to start a second career as a member of executive boards

For the younger women I meet now, gender is less of an issue than managing particular personality types. Where they tend to struggle is not with peers but their supervisors, more male-heavy executive teams where there is not yet a lot of diversity. I also see women being their own worst enemies sometimes by being overly competitive with each other when the real challenge is creating more opportunities for all of us.

Every patient is unique and every patient’s journey is unique. That’s why it’s important to allow the patient to drive the topics and the cadence of the engagement based on what’s happening in that patient’s journey at that particular time. Patient journeys evolve based on a number of factors such as how recently they’ve been diagnosed, how they’re doing on the therapy and how they’re feeling.

Medical monitoring is an essential component of the clinical research process. Medical monitors provide medical expertise and oversight for the entire clinical trial, from initial study design through final study close-out. They ensure the clinical integrity of the trial subjects and provide safety accountability across the duration of the study, while acting as expert points of reference for both investigative sites and study team members.

Going 75 miles an hour… Or when management wants to take risks with drug safety

Recently I had an interesting question posed to me. Someone asked me to help explain to management at his company what happens when the drug safety (DS)/pharmacovigilance (PV) group does not do a good job! Management wanted to know why they needed to continue to invest in more and more resources to report bad things about the company’s products.

As the saying goes, children are not small adults. Children differ markedly from adults in terms of biology and physiology. In particular, how they handle drugs is quite different. Thus the approach of pharmacovigilance to SAEs and AEs in children needs to be somewhat different from that in adults.
