5G is one of the most instrumental factors to usher in the fourth industrial revolution – Industry 4.0. The three main use cases of 5G technology - Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) and Ultra-reliable Low Latency Communication (uRLLC) also mean that operators would need to deal with issues like network reliability and coverage, data integrity and security and need for decentralized architectures (for compute, storage and security). In addition, the troika of consumers, regulators and countries are becoming more concerned about data privacy and sovereignty.

While advances in hardware (chip and sensor technology) and software (AI/ML and AR/VR) are enabling factors to usher in Industry 4.0 revolution, one of the key technologies that warrants more R&D effort in the telecommunications and networking space is blockchain. We can’t discount there are obviously challenges to incorporation of blockchain e.g. performance and scalability issues as well as some of the privacy and security considerations (e.g. 51% attack vulnerability). It is still worthwhile to highlight how blockchain can help address some of the challenges mentioned above and some of the long term possibilities out there.

The use cases for IoT in the context of ERP are many. For example, it can be used for product improvement by making the product provide real-time feedback; it can enhance warranty services and warranty management; it can be used for predictive plant maintenance; the list is endless. However, all of these operate within the restricted paradigm of the current idea of IoT, where the device acts primarily as a sensor or an actuator, but mostly as a sensor. However, IoT takes on a whole new meaning if you think of it as a part of a distributed ERP system. With the concept of distributed ERP, several new possibilities and use cases emerge, as explained in this blog.
