Nick is now on his sixth Volvo Ocean Race. He has competed in the race twice before on ABN AMRO TWO in 2005-06, led by Sebastien Josse on the all-conquering ‘Under-30s’ team. He then participated in the race again on Delta Lloyd in 2008-09. He has done two races as Shore Manager, once for Team Sanya in 2011-12 and again with Amer Sports in 2001-02.
Nick joined the Volvo Ocean Race organisation for the last edition in 2014-15 as Head of the Boatyard, leading the team who serviced and repaired the new class of One Design Volvo Ocean 65 boats at every stopover. His focus is now on the future of the race and the new 60-foot boats – leading the design process.
A boat builder by trade, Nick has grown up around boats and spent 10 years as a professional sailor not only in the Volvo Ocean Race but also two cycles of the America’s Cup.
When you meet Nick, you realise two things very quickly – he is a true-blue Aussie and he LOVES this race. His passion and enthusiasm are infectious and his strong relationships within the industry, the sailors and suppliers, keeping the momentum to build a great future for the race.
He is also super fit, really fit… He ran two marathons and completed three Ironman competitions in 2013, which qualified him for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Nick is married and has three children - he has packed a lot into his 39 years so far, and he shows no signs of slowing up!
