AI has brought about unprecedented advancements across various sectors. However, alongside its benefits, its potential misuse for deception has emerged as a significant concern.

Recently, twenty of the world’s largest tech companies, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, agreed to tackle use of what they are calling deceptive AI in elections. They have signed an accord to deploy technology to detect and counter voter-deceiving content. But one industry expert says the voluntary pact will "do little to prevent harmful content being posted".

According to Leo Lin, Senior Practice Director of Digital Consulting - Digital Strategy & Transformation at HCLTech, as AI capabilities evolve, responsible AI policies need to keep up with what the technology can do or should do. Deceptive AI in action

Deceptive AI encompasses a spectrum of tactics and strategies aimed at misleading or manipulating users and stakeholders. One prevalent form of deception involves biased algorithms that perpetuate discriminatory practices. For instance, Amazon's AI recruitment tool was found to favor male candidates over female ones, highlighting the inherent biases embedded within the algorithm.

Furthermore, AI-driven deepfake technology presents a formidable challenge, enabling the creation of convincingly realistic but entirely fabricated audio and video content. Gartner predicts by 2026, attacks using AI-generated deepfakes on face biometrics will mean that 30% of enterprises will no longer consider such identity verification and authentication solutions to be reliable in isolation.

In marketing and advertising, the pervasive influence of AI-driven deception is blatantly visible, where marketers utilize AI algorithms to personalize content and target specific demographics, often blurring the line between tailored recommendations and manipulative persuasion. Facebook's ad targeting capabilities have faced scrutiny for enabling advertisers to micro-target vulnerable individuals with misleading or false information.

The regulatory challenges and ethical AI 

Regulating deceptive AI poses significant challenges for policymakers and regulatory bodies. The rapid pace of technological innovation often outpaces the development of effective regulatory frameworks. As people’s roles change, they’ll need training to be able to play their in-the-loop and over-the-loop roles, which could require different organizational structures to be set up to manage and leverage the AI technology. However, initiatives such as the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the proposed Algorithmic Accountability Act in the United States aim to address the ethical and legal implications of AI-driven deception.

The proliferation of deceptive AI practices raises profound ethical questions regarding accountability, transparency and societal impact.
