AMPlify Your Career: Building the skills, mindset and momentum for a future at HCLTech

For many engineering students, the final year of college marks the beginning of an important transition—from classrooms and labs into the world of technology careers.

But in a landscape shaped by rapid technological change, AI-powered innovation and evolving workplace expectations, a larger question becomes increasingly important:

What does it take to build a successful career in technology today?

This question formed the core of the recent AMPlify Your Career conversation featuring HCLTech’s campus hiring leader, Prasath Panneerselvam. The session focused on how students can prepare not just for placements, but for long-term, meaningful career growth.

The message was clear: the future belongs to learners, builders and problem-solvers.

The future of hiring is about potential

Technology is evolving faster than ever before. As a result, organizations are increasingly hiring for future potential rather than current expertise.

As shared during the session:

“We are hiring freshers to solve future problems, not current problems.”

This shift changes how students should think about career preparation.

Academic performance remains important, but organizations today are equally interested in how candidates:

  • Approach challenges
  • Learn new skills
  • Apply knowledge
  • Collaborate and adapt

The strongest candidates are often those who demonstrate curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to continuously grow.

Learning. Building. Explaining.

A simple yet powerful framework emerged as a strong indicator of career readiness:

“I’ve learned, I’ve built and I can explain.”

These three capabilities are becoming the foundation of professional success:

  • Learning reflects curiosity and a growth mindset
  • Building reflects the ability to apply knowledge
  • Explaining reflects clarity of understanding

For students, this means going beyond theory and actively applying what they learn through:

  • Projects
  • Experiments
  • Hackathons
  • Practical problem-solving

The goal is not just to know—but to understand deeply and communicate effectively.

Why real projects matter

Projects are often seen as a way to strengthen a resume. In reality, they serve a much deeper purpose.

They demonstrate:

  • Ownership and initiative
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Decision-making under constraints
  • Learning through iteration

A meaningful project is not defined by complexity alone, but by clarity:

  • What problem are you solving?e
  • How did you approach it?
  • What challenges did you face?
  • What did you learn?

As highlighted in the session:

“A good resume should not shout. It should simply prove: I’ve learned, I’ve built and I can explain.”

Students who can confidently articulate their work often stand out more than those who only list tools or certifications. The emphasis is not on building perfect solutions—but on building meaningful ones.

Thriving in the age of AI

AI was another key theme of the discussion. While many conversations focus on disruption, the perspective shared was more enabling.

“Students should become AI-assisted thinkers, not AI users.”

AI is changing how work gets done—but it does not replace the need for human judgment, creativity and accountability.

Students who will thrive are those who:

  • Build strong fundamentals
  • Use AI to accelerate learning
  • Critically evaluate AI-generated outputs

In many ways, AI makes foundational understanding even more important. The ability to question, validate and apply insights is becoming a key differentiator.

A skills-driven approach to early careers

An important aspect discussed was HCLTech’s AMP framework—Ascend, Momentum and Polaris—which is designed to create transparent, skill-driven career opportunities for early talent.

The model enables students to progress based on demonstrated capabilities, learning and performance over time.

At its core, the philosophy is simple:

Capability should create opportunity.

Students begin on a level playing field and progress through consistent effort, learning and growth. This reflects a broader belief that talent can emerge from any background and evolve through continuous development.

Finding your spark

Career success rarely follows a fixed path. Many professionals discover their strengths through exploration and experience.

This idea connects to HCLTech’s employer promise: Find Your Spark.

Students do not need to map out their entire careers on day one. What matters more is:

  • Curiosity
  • A willingness to learn
  • Openness to new experiences

Whether in software engineering, data analytics or emerging technologies, careers evolve through discovery. Finding your spark is about identifying what motivates you and building on it over time.

The mindset that matters most

One of the most relevant insights from the session was a simple shift in perspective:

“Do not prepare only to get an offer letter. Prepare to deserve that opportunity after you receive it.”

Getting hired is an important milestone—but building a career requires sustained effort.

Students who succeed are those who:

  • Continue learning after getting placed
  • Embrace challenges
  • Seek feedback
  • Stay consistent in improving their skills

Careers are not defined by a single moment—but shaped by what follows.

AMPlify your career

The future of technology will be shaped by individuals who can learn continuously, think critically and build with confidence.

At HCLTech, the belief is simple: every student has the potential to create impact and grow into meaningful opportunities.

The journey begins with curiosity.
The momentum comes from learning.
And growth comes from applying that learning over time.

If you're ready to learn, build and grow, it's time to .
