In the last few weeks, our lives have changed in a way we would never have imagined. More than one-third of the world population is home quarantined, and many governments have already announced lockdowns for 3-4 weeks, which could extend to six months.  The COVID19 pandemic has been the driver for these measures.  Utilities, being the top quartile of critical infrastructure sectors, are at the forefront of these disruptions, and the magnitude and breadth of the present crisis are testing the limits of their daily operations. They must operate in firefighting mode to keep lights on for the hospitals and their customers.

Challenges in manufacturing, procurement, distribution, and retail are on the rise, leading to major problems in certain sectors. Adding to this, there are consumer related problems where hoarding of essential goods has put unnecessary pressure on the already-vulnerable supply chain. However, the current scenario of uncertainties might lead to businesses leveraging digital technologies, to rebuild the crumbled. Intelligent procurement, and supply chain management and simulation through intelligent automation and analytics, might show the light in delivering business value in the post-COVID world.
