Medical devices such as infusion pumps and defibrillators are becoming more connected with the hospital networks and the internet. This brings the security risks associated with networks to the forefront. There have been numerous demonstrations of hacking medical devices leading to injuries, including death. The FDA recently created a draft guide for the medical industry for improving medical device security.

However, securing medical devices has its own set of challenges, and conventional practices may not apply. They may, in fact, backfire due to the unique nature of the industry. There will be times when persons unknown to the patient may be allowed access to an implanted medical device which may run contrary to device security principles. These devices are also meant to have minimal processing and battery utilization so they can be used for longer durations outside a hospital setup. But this feature may not meet with the approval of security experts who will need more processing power and other resources for securing devices.
