Unlocking the potential of blockchain for Media Industry
Sheetal Sharma - Lead Consultant, HCL Blockchain Labs | June 12, 2018

Widely available commoditized content and widespread piracy of intellectual property have had far-reaching impact on the media industry. While this gives consumers a lot more options, these market disruptions present challenges to the creators, producers, and distributors of music. Digitization, which makes it possible to copy and distribute content easily, also poses several challenges. This sharing of content reduces artist royalties and leads to loss of revenue for music labels. The lack of a robust rights management system results in loss of revenue for the artist.
Various types of stakeholders exist in the rights management ecosystem, including the artist, the songwriter, the label, publisher, and digital service provider. The artists own the rights and royalties for their work. It is the content provider, such as a record label, can grant permission for the music composition to be reproduced. The mechanical royalty is paid to the artist, songwriter, and publisher based on the number of recordings sold.

Blockchain Solution to Improve Publisher’s Throughput in the Ad Ops Industry
Ved Parkash Pati - Digital Expert | June 11, 2018

Taking a leaf out of “blockchain’s applicability in the music industry” gives us a clear view of how this technology can revolutionize the revenue system in the advertising industry. Being the distributed ledger that it is, a direct relationship between advertisers and publishers can be established. Any advertiser (just like any creator) can simply publish the ad on the ledger with a unique ID and timestamp in a way that it is effectively immutable. This advertisement will contain crucial metadata visible to all the advertisers who, in turn, basis the kind of audience visiting the site will quickly “pick and choose” the ads from the ledger and display it on their websites. For doing so, the advertiser will pay them an incentive per impression or per click (as per the understanding) which will directly flow into the publisher’s kitty without being eaten away by the intermediaries. This transparent system will not only motivate publishers to serve ads judiciously but also assure advertiser community that their money is being spent wisely.
