enterprises identified the needs of dedicated device connectivity at a very early stage. However, the cost of setting up robust connectivity infrastructure was very high. Human communication infrastructure (broadband, 2G, 3G, and LTE) followed later. After that, ecosystem players conducted trials to fulfil the needs of device communication over human communication infrastructure. This revealed that the device communication needs were quite different when compared to human communication needs.

 

With the understanding of device communication came the shift to LPWAN. But even that solved the problem partially. Requirements like high speed and faster response of mission-critical applications required a different kind of network. Know how private LTE came to be the answer here.

As part of the HCL’s 5G strategy, critical investments are being driven to enhance HCL’s play in the 5G Ecosystem. As the Radio Access Network (RAN) gets ‘opened’ or disaggregated, there is plenty of scope for new players to provide radio focused or controller focused solutions. This is the O-RAN buzz that has captured the Telecom news and we in HCL’s Telecom Strategy and Solutions group (SSG) believe there is scope and opportunity for HCL to provide services that will help both vendors and CSPs accelerate their deployment and improve RoI margins.

This blog describes one of HCL’s strategic investments in the 5G space. As the telecom industry gears up for large scale 5G adoption, the scope for integration and orchestration as-a-service is in demand. The HCL O-RAN lab is one of HCL’s offerings which is targeted to help OEMs accelerate 5G adoption and deployment.
