The client is one of the world’s leading providers of core banking solutions with the largest installed base of core banking software serving customers in more than 120 countries.

Business Context

The client had developed a flagship core banking product and was on the look out for a capable partner with a sound core banking knowledge base coupled with technology expertise, with potential to:

  • Install their software in various locations globally with aggressive implementation schedules
  • Integrate seamlessly with the existing systems and bringing in necessary customizations
  • Incorporate new functionalities to cater to specific end customer requirements without compromising on performance and throughput
  • Version upgrade with focus on scalability and new product features catering to market necessity
  • Enhance application to ensure peak performance for handling steep increase in customer volumes

The client had a set of customers who were interested in their core banking product and others who had already procured the product. There was a constant need from these customers to assist in implementation, customization and enhancement.

HCL Solution

HCL Technologies partnered with the client to enable them implement the requirements of its various customers. The services ranged from requirements design, development to implementation, customization and testing of the product across various end customers, typically Tier 1 and Tier 2 banks across the world.

Some of the key projects in which HCL partnered with the client and delivered significant value are as follows:

  1. A major Eastern European bank which had bought the previous version of the core banking product required the system to be enhanced to handle more than a million customers without impacting the performance. It was a complex development impacting Retail, Dealing, Lending, FT, GL, SWIFT, SD and Exposure management modules. HCL was responsible for enhancements, development of test cases, functional testing and implementation support with minimal impact on performance.
  2. One of the critical projects for the client was to integrate their flagship commercial banking product with their retail banking product and offer a universal banking solution to customers. HCL was involved in all stages of this project which included system design, development, integration and test automation services for Standing data and Retail module.
  3. The client had undertaken a project for a Germany based banking major to incorporate major enhancements to facilitate centralization of static data. This initiative would enable the master zone to send data to the client zones with a view to greatly simplifying maintenance and reducing redundancy. HCL was responsible for the development of enhancements based on the outline architecture, low level design, unit test case preparation and unit testing, independent functional testing, test automation including development of automation scripts on the basis of functional specifications provided by the bank.
  4. HCL is responsible for conceptualizing, designing and implementing the Euro conversion solution for major Eastern European banks whose countries were in the process of joining the Euro Zone. These are highly critical projects which impact practically the entire core banking systems including Forex, Money Market, General Ledger as well as Internal Control Data / Standing Data modules.
  5. It was imperative for EU banks and consequently the core banking systems to comply with MiFID regulations which deals with authorizations, regulation and passporting, client categorization, client order handling, pre trade transparency, post trade transparency, best execution and systematic internaliser. This led to the launch of a client project to enable the core banking product to comply with MiFID. HCL was responsible for owning this critical project to develop the complex enhancements and led to a development which comprehensively addressed the MiFID specific requirements.
